The equation between grandchildren and grandparents is unique in many ways.They can swing from delight to despair in a matter of seconds. Aania,my four year old granddaughter,my daughter,my wife and I were on an Indigo flight from Lucknow to Delhi.After having briefly surveyed the surroundings,she asked. "Nana why are those auntie's legs so black" It was no muffled tone.I hastened to explain that they were wearing black stockings,part of their uniform. Aania shot back."I know stocking.but why black."All efforts to divert her attention failed and she persisted."Nana ,I want to touch them".A no you cant,and ,but I want to exchange followed.Pilot s announcement that we were cruising at 23,000ft ,did not help.Finding no escape route I told her to take their permission."NO, Nana you ask them".I tried to convince her that  I cant.With a number of 'pleases' prefixed,she continued,with the volume rising,By now the the descent had commenced.I told her that if i did what she was asking me to do,they would throw me out.I saw an anticipatory glint of sheer delight at the bizarre possibility of Nana being thrown out by  the crew.Touch down came to my rescue.I do not why ,but one of the crew handed her a blank,child passport.I almost thought, they would have loved the throwing out act as  much as Aania.
